Have you looked at the ingredient label and wondered if there were stimulant-free preworkouts?

We now live in a world where people are unashamed of, and actively promote, their inclinations toward stimulants—perhaps due to our busy lives, in which we work too hard and get too little sleep.

But our dependence on stimulants has become so normal, people have forgotten that it is a form of drug addiction. In fact, caffeine is the most widely consumed psychoactive drug in the world, thanks to sodas, energy drinks, and of course the main culprit—coffee.

It’s easy to forget that there are some people who don’t care for stimulants. There are a number of reasons why they might find it off-putting. Allergies or sensitivities, distaste, diet, or even just personal preference are all reasons someone could have no interest in stimulants at all.

So what do they do in the world of fitness, where stimulants are revered because they make us stronger and faster and keep us going?

If you are one of these people, there is no reason for you to exclude yourself from the trends. I’m going to introduce you to some of the best stimulant-free preworkouts.

First, there are some questions I must answer.

Why Are There Stimulants in Preworkouts?

A stimulant can be defined as any substance that rouses your nervous system and changes your body’s metabolism. In doing so, they imitate your body’s fight-or-flight response, which explains its physical effects, like spikes in energy and an increase in heart rate, alertness, and insomnia.

To put it simply, stimulants make you work harder. They’re a favorite addition to preworkouts because they give you more energy, keep you focused, and even increase your endurance by suppressing your pain receptors.

The premise is that stimulants enable more intense and longer lasting workouts, which improves your fitness and assists with weight loss. Still, just because they are preferred in stimulants doesn’t mean they are necessary. In fact, sometimes they have adverse effects.

The best stimulant-free preworkouts will give you just as strong a boost as the energizers do but without the harsh side effects.

The Downside to Stimulants

Stimulants are effective, but that’s not always good. There are a few risks of ingesting them, and the risk is somewhat increased in preworkouts because they‘re known to have high doses of them.

Sensitivity to stimulants can induce a number of unpleasant side effects, including:

  • Jitters
  • Nervousness or anxiety
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Increased or rapid pulse
  • Mood swings
  • Tingling
  • Numbness
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Headaches
  • Itching or skin irritation
  • Increased body temperature
  • Diarrhea
  • Cramps
  • Dehydration
  • Dizziness

…and those are the mild symptoms of stimulant overdose. They can also cause hallucinations, panic attacks, breathlessness, aggression, psychosis, seizures, and heart attacks.

Suddenly they don’t sound so great, do they?

But those aren’t the only risks. Stimulants can be dangerously addictive, and abuse can be deadly. What makes this even worse is that the high amounts of stimulants in preworkouts can lead to overdose.

Considering the fact that many people combine preworkouts with other stimulants, there is cause for some serious concern.

Stimulants aren’t so dangerous you shouldn’t use them at all. Extreme cases of preworkout abuse are few and far between, and many (if not most) brands are deemed safe by third parties.

But they have to be used responsibly, and sometimes that means not using them at all. Choosing to go for one of the best stimulant-free preworkouts instead can save you from damaging your nervous system or making yourself sick.

Beware of These Stimulants

If you want to avoid stimulants entirely, there are many ingredients that you’ll have to watch out for. The best stimulant-free preworkouts will exclude the following:

  • Caffeine: One of the most popular preworkout choices. You might struggle to find supplements that don’t contain it.
  • 1,3-DMAA: No longer an acceptable addition to preworkouts due to it functioning as an amphetamine and being of unknown origin. It can have dangerous effects.
  • Ephedrine: One of the most powerful stimulants you can find. It’s been banned in a number of countries.
  • Dendrobium: A natural stimulant that’s been used in traditional medicine for centuries.
  • Yohimbine: So powerful that in Canada it’s considered a prescription drug. In the US, it continues to be added to preworkouts, even though most manufacturers reject it in fear of lawsuits.
  • Theobromine: Very similar to caffeine. It’s most commonly found in chocolate and tea.

Of course, there are other stimulants I might have missed. If you buy any supplement, make sure you research its ingredients. Some stimulants are sneaky, and it’s easy to disguise them.

The Five Best Stimulant-Free Preworkouts

That list of stimulants might seem like it has eliminated every single preworkout from the running, but there is still hope. I have selected what I feel are the five best stimulant-free preworkouts. I’ve judged them based on their ingredients and effectiveness.

Best Stimulant-Free Preworkouts

RSP Pump Boost

Our Overview

RSP may not be the most popular supplement around, but it has a loyal fanbase who swears by its power. The company has created one of the best stimulant-free preworkouts because its quality and effect haven’t been compromised at all.

It’s an eco-friendly product that has no side effects, as far as I know. Customer satisfaction is high with this product, and that says a lot.

  • Low in calories
  • Tastes great
  • Waste-free

  • The texture is undesirable
  • Solidifies fast

PSP Preworkout

Our Overview

I found this one while researching preworkouts for women. It’s so popular, it is considered the best of the best stimulant-free preworkouts by many. It’s high in vitamins and minerals, and fans swear by its power.

Although it doesn’t contain stimulants, it does have creatine in it, so it’s best suited for weight training. It can be used for cardio too, though, since the risk of adverse effects is lessened significantly by the absence of caffeine and other energizers.

  • Has a high vitamin and mineral content
  • Contains creatine for building muscle
  • There should be no side effects with use

  • Contains a suspicious amount of additives
  • Creatine factors in, if you’re trying to avoid it
  • Contains sucralose

PUMPSURGE Caffeine Free PreWorkout

Our Overview

PUMPSURGE describes its product as “one of a kind,” and relies “exclusively on ergogenic boosters and nootropic ingredients.” This is one of the best stimulant-free preworkouts because, in place of energizers, it has a whole lot of amino acids instead.

Its ingredients include the amino acids L-citrulline, betaine, and taurine. Some mistake taurine for a stimulant because it is commonly added to energy drinks, but there is no evidence to support this, so PUMPSURGE is in the clear.

  • Contains amino acids
  • Ingredients support endurance
  • No artificial colorants
  • Tastes good

  • Citrulline content could be higher
  • Contains artificial sweeteners

PSI Non-Stimulant Preworkout

Our Overview

EHPLabs has a stimulant-free formula that gives you a kick by enhancing your circulation. The PSI “vasodilator nutrient delivery maximizer” contains a somewhat unique blend of nitric oxide and what they call “muscle cell plasma volumizing ingredients.”

EHPLabs claims that this preworkout can give you mental clarity and improved “mind-muscle connection,” and happy customers agree that it works just as advertised. It’s also zero fat, which is great!

It’s an underrated product that won’t cause any jitters or crashes, and it definitely has the potential to become one of the best stimulant-free preworkouts on the market.

  • Formulated to make your body give itself a boost, instead of adding chemicals that give you a boost
  • No side effects
  • No crashes
  • Customer satisfaction is excellent

  • Contains artificial flavorings and sucralose
  • It’s a growing product that doesn’t have as much credit as bigger competitors

51BB2Bdn WL

Our Overview

VASOBLITZ has taken the best stimulant-free preworkouts to the next level in creating what might be the strongest one you could find.

It only contains four main ingredients: citrulline, calcium, arginine, and betaine. It’s a formula that seems to work, though. I recommend this one to people who are looking for the same buzz you’d get from stimulants without the worry of their side effects.

  • High doses of ingredients make it extra effective
  • The simple formula is transparent
  • Customer satisfaction is fantastic
  • Tastes fine

  • Complaints exist that the product is too small
  • Not budget-friendly
  • Strong, maybe uncomfortably so for people who don’t want a buzz

My Choice for Best Stimulant-Free Preworkouts

I’ll admit it: finding five good products to put on this list was quite a challenge, and much trickier than I thought it would be. Hopefully, with time, stimulant-free supplements will grow to be more popular.

In the meantime, I chose the RSP Pump Boost as my number one of the best stimulant-free preworkouts because it’s the most well-rounded of them all. It’s affordable, it tastes and feels great, it has a good reputation, and it works.

So long as you can see past its odd texture (which is on account of the exclusion of anti-solidifying agents), you’ll find an eco-friendly, high-grade product that is just as effective as its stimulant competitors.

The best stimulant-free preworkouts might not be mainstream (yet), but the world grows more health conscious every day. The thought of stimulant-free supplements becoming the norm is not inconceivable.

While we wait for that day to come, though, just remember that no matter which product you settle on, you have to do your research. Just because there won’t be stimulants in a product, it doesn’t mean that it’s automatically healthier or even good for you.
